NEWater Plant Trip

It is a memorable and educational day today. My hospital, CGH, is conducting a trip to one of the NEWater Plant which is in Bedok. This trip is organized in conjunction with the Green & Clean Week in CGH. It was a last minute arrangement that I made. I decided to visit this plant just 1 day prior to the trip day. I called & managed to change shift with 1 of my colleague, agreed by my Nurse Manager.
There were 5 of us; Sister Aishah, Mommy Tong, Lu Yuan, Farhana & Me. We're getting ready by 3pm & went to the waiting bus, beside the A&E department. We're the first to reach & waited the rest in the bus. At 3.30pm, the bus we're on started the journey & we reached within 10 minutes later.
NEWater is 1 of the Singapore National Taps which has 4 plants. The other 3 plants are in Kranji, Ulu Pandan & Seletar. The other 3 National Taps are Local Catchment Water, Imported Water & Desalinated Water. All these National Taps has their own plants scattered around in Singapore.
The trip in the plant started at 4pm. We're invited into an auditorium where we were sitted to watch and understand abt Singapore's search for alternative sources of water & discover how PUB makes use of advanced technology to produce NEWater. After that, we're ushered into WaterWise Arcade to learn more abt water with a few interactive stations. What impressed me was that this arcade has a raft which we can sit on to experience the ride down Singapore's beautiful & clean water. It is a simulation ride with a screen where we can see the water & some building along the ride. You can feel the raft is moving up & down the stream.
What I like most is the NEWater factory experience where we were shown to how the NEWater is produced in 3 key steps; Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis & Ultraviolet Filtration (water is pass through ultraviolet less than a second to kill the remaining micro bacteria). The final steps in the production is Conditioning where the pH of the water is adjusted. During the trip, we were given 1 bottle of NEWater to try out.
Finally, we're thanked for the visiting and shown the exit way to a beautiful garden with pond filled with 'Li Yu' fish. And each of us were given an apple!!!
Heh!!! This trip reminded me to the school time when my school made visiting trip to some factories for education purpose...... :-p

Busy & Sad Moment

13-16/10/2007
It was really busy days at work. Ward is packed with nearly half occupancy of pts.
Although total pts were low, the workload is heavy and tough. Almost all pts were bedbound and need nursing attention...personal hygiene & grooming, hourly parameter, hypocount monitoring, dressing and etc......
Huh!!! Not all that, the pt's relatives are also quite difficult to handle. The family members wanted we gave immediate attention to the pt. One of the very sick pt was mourning and groaning in pain at her operation site that her cry can be heard from outside. It was pain to hear that cry. She had been crying on and off since last few days even though she was in oral pain killer.
It was sad that she did not make it on 1 fine morning (15/10/07). She had a last breath when I just finished taking her hypocount reading. The monitor at the nursing counter showed that it has lost pt's pulse. Everything was so fast, doctor being called and resuscitation started. After almost 1 hour, it yield nothing to safe her. Family member were informed and they broke down...oh dear...
After a while later, I did a last office for her. All of a sudden, my tears started to fill my eyes. Very quickly, I sheded the tears away, afraid that my colleague EN noticed it. The pt had reminded me to my mother and out of a sudden I miss my mother so much...that it cause my tears running down without my conscious...
Later in the evening, while I was travelling in the MRT, my tears flow again when the pt's face reflect in my mind again. When I reached home later that night, I made a long distance call home and it was a big relieve when I heard my mom voice...Sigh!!!
And guess what!!! Another sick pt "left" within 24 hrs, the next day when I was on duty...
